A brief outline of the syllabus:

 The syllabus is divided into two parts:-

 The core syllabus comprising ten sections:-

a)  cell structure   b)  biological molecules   c)  enzymes   d)  cell and nuclear division   e)  genetic control  and inheritance   f)  inherited change and evolution   g)  energetics   h)  ecology  

i)  transport   j)  regulation and control

The option syllabus:-  Candidates will study two options.  The two options offered are :-

Option 1:  Biodiversity    Option 4:  Growth, development and reproduction.

The particular qualities which are needed for this subject:

·        An interest in reading widely (in view of the broad syllabus which requires in-depth and detailed study).

·        An ability to understand and remember biological facts, terminology, principles, relationships and concepts.

·        Skills in critical thinking, data analysis and interpretation and the application of biological knowledge to solve related problems.

·        Experimental skills – the ability to devise, plan and carry out experimental activities and to interpret, evaluate and communicate the experimental results.

·        The ability to communicate biological information coherently.  For this a reasonable command of English is required.

Examination:

Paper 1                   Structured and Free response questions ( Options )           2 hours 30 minutes

Paper 2                   Multiple choice questions ( Core )                                     1 hour

Paper 3                   Short answers and Free response questions ( Core )          1 hour 30 minutes

Paper 6                  Practical Examination                                                         2 hours 30 minutes

Suggested prior grades which A level teachers feel are necessary for success in this subject: 

(NB These may not be the minimum entry qualifications set by the Ministry)

O level Biology - ideally with grade 5 or better

O level English - ideally with grade 6 or better

Further education and career prospects for someone who studies this subject:-

Prospects are good and diverse e.g. in medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, medical laboratory technology, physiotherapy, radiography, occupational therapy, nursing, genetics, optometry, bio-technology, food science, dietetics, microbiology, agriculture, veterinary science, forestry, teaching, ecology or environmental science, marine science etc.
